hi guys and welcome back my name is
Jessica likewise founder of C and CEO of
hope education services every week I
poke I posted video answering a question
about autism and ABA so tonight’s
question is what is shaping and I’m
answering this question because it’s a
term I’ve used a lot in the some of the
videos I’ve made and posted over the
previous couple weeks and so some
parents are a little bit confused
so shaping is when you reinforce what a
child’s best responses at the time while
you’re teaching a behavior or it’s the
reinforcement of approximations or
successive approximations of behavior is
the technical term so let’s put it in
really simple standards let’s say I’m
trying to get a child to say the word
bubble but they can’t say bubble so
maybe one day they say ah and I know
they mean bubble well I’m gonna praise
them and reward them for it I’m not
gonna say hey no that’s the wrong thing
I wanted you to say bubble I can’t
believe you said ah if I was the best
thing that they’ve ever done and it was
their first time ever saying it that’s
fantastic so we’re gonna reinforce that
but let’s say one day they start saying
ba ba ba well now but is the closest
they can get to bubble so I’m gonna be
reinforcing but instead of us so if they
say ah I’m probably not gonna give them
the bubbles but if they say ba then I’m
gonna give them the bubbles because I
know I know they’re doing the best that
they can so then let’s say okay one day
they start saying ba ba
well now I’m like hey you know what they
can do Bubba that’s even closer to
bubble than buck so when they say but
I’m not going to give them bubbles but I
am gonna give them bubbles if they say
Bubba and then obviously the last step
right once they can say bubbles then I
only accept that response but the
problem is if I would have required them
to say bubbles the very first time and
they just physically couldn’t do it
they’re gonna get really really
frustrated and chances are they’re gonna
give up which is gonna make the whole ad
experience not very fun and very
frustrating for both the child and the
provider so by doing shaping we’re
allowing a child to to get a reward
for the best response they can do over
the period of learning time so there’s
one example I hope that helps and I hope
that answers your questions if you have
any more please keep the questions
