you
hi and welcome back tonight we’re going
to talk about what a B is and what it
stands for probably if someone you know
our love was diagnosed with autism they
probably along the lines will receive
ABA services so what does it stand for
ABA stands for applied behavior analysis
well now that we know what it stands for
what does it mean ABA is when we take
the principles of behavior and we apply
them to everyday social situations to
change our behavior so practically what
we’re doing is we’re increasing
behaviors we want to see and we’re
decreasing behaviors we don’t want to
see so we know that children with autism
they oftentimes will have a lot of
excessive behaviors we don’t want to see
that might be tantruming it might be
aggression it might be heading it might
be running around engaging in stereo
atopy all those behaviors and ABA
therapists will seek to decrease
additionally a be a therapist will seek
to increase behaviors we do want to see
that means talking eye contact
requesting and asking for things all of
those things are what ABA therapists
will work on as you may already know the
symbol for autism internationally has
become a puzzle piece now oftentimes
people like to associate autism as a
puzzle piece because they’re really not
sure exactly what causes it and it seems
like a mystery to solve but for me I
like to look at it a little bit
differently for me I like to look at
each and individual puzzle piece as one
skill or one behavior the job of an ABA
therapists would be to figure out what
skills are missing and to teach them so
we can complete the puzzle this is the
only way that children are gonna be the
most successful if we can teach them to
make eye contact teach them to ask for
things a lot of the other behaviors that
we don’t want to see are going to
decrease and the children are gonna be
much much more successful so here’s an
example an ABA therapists will teach a
child who cries every time they’re
hungry or maybe stands at the
refrigerator and jumps
and down to ask their parents for a
cookie now this could be with verbal
language it could be with a choice board
it could be using some form of
alternative communication device and all
these are topics that we’ll cover from
week to week there are some things that
are important to know about ABA the
first is it’s the only scientifically
validated treatment for autism there’s a
lot of people who claim that they can
treat autism in other ways now there’s a
lot of really good things you can do for
your children I know a lot of people
like to do equine therapy they like to
do for time they like to do different
social groups and a lot of these can
have really strong benefits but the only
scientifically validated treatment for
autism is ABA for that reason in the
United States
insurance companies are required to
cover it and most school districts or
early intervention will offer it so the
treatment probably is available for your
son or daughter if you were to look for
it so my recommendation is that you give
your school district a call your
insurance company a call or ask your
child’s pediatrician whether or not ABA
is right for them
I love when parents reach out to me and
ask different questions it’s my passion
to be able to help families across the
globe I’m so excited we’re only in week
two of this series and we’ve already
spanned across three different
continents if you have a question that
you’d like to ask me I am happy to help
you and I’m happy to answer it just
email me at Jessica at Jessica likewise
calm I promise to do my best to answer
the question and if I can’t I will
