What is Maintenance? ABA Terms Defined
Did you know that the kids whose parents know the most about ABA and take an active role in their program tend to benefit the most from therapy. In this video series, I will define important ABA terms you need to know to have the important conversations with your therapist that will help your child succeed.

hey guys it’s Jessica like where IC
o—- of hope education services and I
just want to welcome you to my family
training YouTube series where every week
I post a video to help you help your
child achieve excellence in all areas of
their life ABA is one of the best
treatments for a child who has autism I
am a firm believer that children can
fully recover from autism and go on to
lead completely typical lives and get
married and have kids and go to school
and all the amazing things that every
parent wants for their child and in my
10 years of experience as a behavior
analyst parents constantly are asking me
you know what is it that helps a child
be successful why are some children
successful and why are some children not
as successful and it’s a really
difficult question to answer and then
there’s many many variables that play
into it but what I have found is that
for every child who really achieves
success in an ABA program when their
parents are knowledgeable about ABA and
what’s going on in their behavior
program they’re far more likely to
succeed and that’s why I’ve decided to
bring this special training series to
you where I’m gonna define every week a
different ABA term so when you’re
speaking to your ABA therapists you know
what you’re talking about and you can
make sure you’re using the right
language that they’re including really
important parts into the programming
that many times some ABA therapists will
actually overlook and tonight I’m gonna
talk about one of the most important get
one of the most highly overlooked parts
of an ABA program and that’s maintenance
so what maintenance is simply is to
practice skills that a child’s learned
so they don’t forget them so we’ve all
been there where you have bought things
for the kids and we’ve spent months and
months working on that maybe your child
had a really difficult time learning to
do a puzzle and they got it and it was
so exciting in your therapist celebrated
it and they moved on to something else
maybe now they’re doing a shape sorter
or they’re playing elephant and catching
butterflies whatever it is right
whatever it is that your child likes but
your therapist forgot all about the
puzzle and let’s say meet but they
haven’t done it in a couple months and
was this thrown in the bottom of the the
bin that they use with keep all their
toys in and a couple months later they
pull it out and they’re like hey this
damn do the puzzle and he completely
forgot it he doesn’t know how to do it
you have to start all over again well
typically if that happens what that
means is they don’t have a formal
maintenance section in an ABA program or
in an ABA binder so what happens is if
you don’t have it planned to practice it
you’re probably gonna forget to do it
and over time as children learn more and
more skills the therapist is gonna
forget what they did everyday they’re
gonna forget to continue to practice
every week every day every month all the
things that the kids learn and
eventually the kids learn this lose the
skills that they learned which really
defeats the entire purpose now a good
ABA therapist is likely to pick programs
where they’re naturally maintained by
the activities they do in their everyday
environment for example you know you
would probably not necessarily need to
teach a child how to cut hair but you
may need to teach them to brush his hair
because he’s gonna be brushing his hair
every day so you know that’s naturally
gonna be maintained but for skills like
puzzles skills like you know tying your
shoes well that’s something that’s
natural maintained but those are all
things that need to be practiced on a
regular basis so your child doesn’t lose
them so I hope that was helpful I would
encourage you after watching this video
if you don’t know if your child has a
maintenance program officially set up
ask your therapist and make sure that’s
something that they’re working on it’s
such an important skill I just want to
