Did you know that the more informed you are as a parent, the more likely your child is to benefit from ABA? That’s because you will be able to have more productive conversations with your therapists as well as carryout out the procedures they are using at home.

This video is part of a special series called ABA Terms Defined. In this video, I define the term reinforcer.

a professional camera I have back drives
and all these lights and I have a
beautiful office and would make these
videos and I do my hair and I’m my
makeup and I get like one video out a
month for you but here’s a thing that I
know as a parent of a child with autism
autism doesn’t happen once a month for
your family it happens all day every day
so I made a commitment to come on here
every single day and just in between
clients while I’m at the gym while I’m
taking my dog for a walk wherever I am
you know I’m thinking about you I want
to help you I want to make your life
easier I want to make your you’re being
a mom more enjoyable of a child with
autism so I have these tips I have these
strategies that I want to give you and
this is it this is me raw real I got to
client I’ve like literally two minutes
early so I have two minutes to share
this with you
so I wanted to give you the definition
of a reinforcer now this is part of the
special video series I’m doing called
ABA terms defined now if you don’t know
what ABA stands for it stands for
applied behavior analysis it is one of
the most scientifically validated the
most scientifically validated treatment
for children with autism a I have a
video what is ABA I can put it in the
comes this video if you don’t know what
it is watch that if you do know what it
is keep watching this so reinforcer one
of the things so parents say to me all
the time well it was a reinforcer reward
is a reinforcer bribery I like that one
sometimes it kind of feels like it right
but a reinforcer by definition is
anything that makes a behavior more
likely to occur again so that can
actually be really good or it can be not
so good so for example let’s just say
you know child’s learning to talk and
they say cookie and you give them cookie
well the cookie served is a reinforcer
because next time they want a cookie
they’re more likely to say it why
because they got what they wanted the
reinforcer could also not be a great
thing let’s just say your child is like
screaming on you’re on a business call
and they’re screaming on the phone and
you have like no idea why they’re
screaming but you need them to be quiet
like all the JIT need them to be quiet
so all the ABA all the techniques the
mother window and you’re like hey come
here have a cookie because you know if
there’s a cookie in their mouth they’re
not gonna be screaming well that cookie
then it also served as a reinforcer
because they’re more likely neck
time to start screaming on the phone so
you know eight every enforcer doesn’t
necessarily good or bad a lot of people
think of reinforcer means it’s a good
thing it doesn’t actually have a value
right it’s like money my name is no
value could do good things with it or
you can do bad things with it a
reinforcer it’s not good or bad it just
means it’s gonna make a behavior more
likely to occur again so I really really
hope this was helpful
listen I’ve even ask you a favor right
now if you’re watching this on Facebook
go into my youtube channel just type in
hope education services the URLs parent
training videos to come it’ll bring you
right to my YouTube channel I want you
to number one type in questions I’m
committed to doing this every single day
well in order to make these videos every
day for your family I need to know what
you need to know because the truth is
I’m out of ideas I’m out of content
knife-like I’m just trying to think of
way when it comes up for me in sessions
and that’s what I’m making these videos
on is okay what a parent’s asking me I
figured if the parents asking me this
I’m working with a child you probably
had that same question but I really
really truly need your help to make this
channel effective for you so I want you
to type a question out in the comments
of these videos I promise you if it’s in
my area of expertise I will answer for
you and I will even make a bigger
promise which is if it’s not in my area
of expertise I will partner with another
professional and bring them on and have
them answer that question for you you
know I’m passionate about helping
families my goal my vision is that every
parent everywhere in the world knows how
to help their child with autism that
there’s no questions that they have
they’re left unanswered so this is it
you know me going through my day doing
the best I can to serve your family now
make it an amazing day I am sorry I’m
trying to figure out so this is my first
time and since we’re being Romney on the
channel recording a video on Facebook

that on Facebook this is slip diff so I
apologize I don’t really know where to
look on the camera and my hands in the
way but I am gonna go see my kid have an
amazing amazing day and again please
type in a question I really want to help
