hey guys welcome back so tonight we’re
gonna discuss a question that I got from
a parent and that’s why is it so
important to know the function of a
behavior that’s a really great question
because in a BA it is really important
to know the function of a behavior you
might remember back to one of my first
videos where I talked about what ABA is
so what we discussed is that an ABA
therapists changes of behavior by
figuring out what happens before
behavior and what happens after behavior
so the after the behavior part that’s
the behavior intervention they before
the behavior part is the really
important part to know what we’re
supposed to do so there’s two terms
you’re probably gonna hear really really
often from your behaviorist number one
is the topography of behavior that’s
what a behavior looks like and the
second is the function of a behavior and
that’s why a child’s engaging in a
behavior oftentimes the topography of
behavior can look the same or in other
words a behavior can look the same but
actually a child’s engaging it for two
very very different reasons and since
the reasons are so different in ABA the
response has to be different so let’s
give you an example let’s say that Joe
is playing with his toy train and then
he hits his sister Sally well Bob comes
in and finds out that Joe had Sally and
gives Joe a timeout well that’s probably
an appropriate consequence because Joe
is playing with his trains and so he
lost his trains and undesirable
consequence as a result of hitting his
sister but let’s look at another example
let’s say mom tells Joe to put the
trains away and then he turns around and
hits his sister and then Joe gets a
timeout well in reality Joe is getting
exactly what he wants he doesn’t have to
clean his trains up that’s why it’s so
important to know what the function of a
behavior
and that can be really really hard to
find out the best way to know the
function of a behavior is to really ask
your behavior is to conduct an FBA
or a functional behavior assessment or
simply to take ABC data which will
determine what happened before the
behavior what the behavior was and what
happened after the behavior knowing that
is going to give us the function of the
behavior and it’s going to give us
exactly what the right response is to do
so I hope that gets your question
answered and why it’s so important to
know the function of the behavior listen
guys I really love to answer your
questions so please just keep them
coming my emails Jessica at Jessica
likewise calm any questions you have
shoot me an email if I can answer it
I’ll make a video for you god bless and
have a great night
